The caliber 23, like its immediate predecessor the caliber 13, is based on the extremely successful Valjoux 7750.
Breitling developed the caliber 23 to modify the layout of the subdials from the typical Valjoux 7750 (and caliber 13) telltale design to the popular tri-compax design.
This requires more extensive modifications to the movement than the caliber 13 does and obviously increases the price of the Navitimer.
A "victim" of this changed mechanism is the date setting feature. The caliber 13 design had a quick-set feature, but on a caliber 23 powered Breitling you will have to move the hour hand back and forth between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. to advance the date. This may be a slightly less convenient procedure, but this principle is also used by other manufacturers and on some Valjoux 7750 variants even by ETA/Valjoux themselves.
